Remember when EA tried to poke fun at single player games and the Internet kicked its ass? Well, the publisher has changed its tune. Speaking during a quarterly financial call, the company said that solo adventures are a “really, really important part” of its product mix – and, to be fair, that is reflected in its current lineup, which includes a Dead Space remake, a new Mass Effect, and a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel.
Speaking to investors, boss Andrew Wilson rambled about the organization’s motivations and objectives: “When we think about our portfolio and we think about building it out, we really think about it on two key vectors. One, how can we tell incredible stories? And two, how can we build tremendous online communities? And then how do we bring those two things together?”
He continued: “The way we plan for it over time is really just looking at our community, and looking at how they’re spending their time, and looking at where motivations may or may not be fulfilled. And we’ll look to supplement that with the addition of new online games, new multiplayer games, and new single player games.”
Despite all this, EA – like so many other publishers – is generating the vast majority of its income from live service games. But the word is that it’s also working on a single player Black Panther game, and according to Giant Bombs Jeff Grubb, it may have a second Marvel project in the works. this, as shared by fellow scribe Tom Hendersoncould be an Iron Man game – although he seems uncertain.
Either way, all we’d really ask from the publisher is a better portfolio of products, and it does seem to finally be acknowledging that. We actually like FIFA, Apex Legends, and Madden NFL – but it’d be good to see some other projects coming out of the company to complement them.
